I refer to the recent speech by Jeanne Abdullah in Rembau, urging housewives to grow vegetables in their gardens to help reduce their expenses in view of rising food prices (due to her husband’s misguided decision to raise fuel prices). You can find this laughable article in the government controlled New Straits Times but definitely not in Malaysiakini or Malaysia Today.
The speech was utterly ridiculous and downright condescending towards all citizens of modern Malaysia, especially when it came from the mouth of a Prime Minister’s wife.
First of all, how much can planting vegetables in our tiny backyards be economical enough to counteract the accelerating inflation rate of the country? Secondly, not all people live in landed properties. In fact, poor people are now forced to live in tiny pigeon holes called flats and apartments. Does she expect us to plant taugeh in our washing machines and brinjals on our balcony?
Lastly, does she know that there are actually Malaysians who have to work hard at two or three jobs in order to keep their families alive? Hello, not everyone can afford to hire a MAID to water the plants okay?
The root cause of inflation in this country is none other than fifty years of mismanagement by the powers that be. The solution – remove these people from power.
Now, let’s talk about the deplorable state of our agriculture sector.
Malaysia is blessed with fertile soil and constant weather throughout the year. We are safely enthroned between two big oceans rich with marine life.
And yet, why has our agriculture sector deteriorated to such a state that we have to import rice from Thailand to replenish our supply? It is a shame indeed that Malaysia has regressed to become a handicap that depends on neighbours for our staple food.
Instead of giving illogical speeches that showed one’s lack of knowledge on the subject, one should have suggested ways to revive our agriculture sector through a change in the government’s policies.
After so many decades of research and millions of ringgit spent, MARDI should have developed better strains of padi and modernize its cultivation. Sadly, as we can all see, this is not happening.
Where have all the millions gone to? Has it all gone into subsidizing farmers, when in actual fact part of the money should have gone into helping them improve their yield? Has the government forgotten the wise saying “Give a hungry man a fish, and he will not be hungry for a day; but teach him how to fish, and he will be able to feed himself forever”?
Malaysia needs to seriously revamp its agriculture policies. The real focus should be on providing adequate food supply for the people’s consumption instead of just concentrating on cash crops.
Instead of giving garden tips in their speeches, our government should be talking about ways to improve our methods of cultivation and productivity.
Below I reprint the article from New Straits Times.

Jeanne: Grow more vegetables
By : Dharshini Balan and Heidi Foo
REMBAU: The prime minister's wife, Datin Paduka Seri Jeanne Abdullah, has urged housewives who like gardening to also grow vegetables as this could help reduce their expenses in view of rising food prices.
She said such efforts required minimal capital while the benefits could be reaped as early as four weeks after the seeds were sowed. "Apart from being a food source, these vegetables can beautify our surroundings. We can also work with neighbours to grow different kinds of vegetables."For example, one could plant chilies, while the other plants tomatoes and then you can do some barter trading. "This will not only help us reduce our household expenditure but also bring some profits."
Jeanne was speaking at the launch of the state-level Green Earth Project at Taman Rembau Utama here yesterday. Also present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Rembau member of parliament Khairy Jamaluddin.
Jeanne shared her experience growing vegetables, saying she and her husband shared a passion for gardening and would try to find time to indulge in the hobby."Although our garden is not big, we are happy to spend time working on it, especially when we are able to enjoy the fruits of our labour with our family and friends."
At another function, Jeanne said more should be done for the disabled. She called on private companies to show that they care by intensifying their corporate social responsibility programmes.
She was speaking after launching the "One Product, One Community Rehabilitation" programme at the Craft Complex in Seremban. More than 100 disabled people from seven districts participated.

Ismail: Youths need guidance
By JO TEH
PETALING JAYA: Breakdancers and shufflers should not be deemed as juvenile delinquents just because they are interested in something outside our culture, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“It is our responsibility to understand today's youth. These breakdancers and shufflers are not necessarily bad kids,” he said at the launch of Rakan Muda Remaja Siber here yesterday.
“Just because they enjoy activities that are different from our culture, it does not mean they should be shunned,” he said, adding that the people, especially parents need to understand, respect and nurture what these kids do.
Ismail said that if a safe and proper place was provided for these youths, they could become outstanding members of society.
Popping moves: Ismail (left) and Jeanne (blue top) being entertained by a shuffler yesterday.
Rakan Muda Remaja Siber is a cyber kiosk programme (www.2-u.com.my) under the Rakan Muda Seven Lifestyles umbrella, an initiative under the Youth and Sports Ministry.
Other programmes under the umbrella are Anugerah Remaja Perdana, Jiran Muda, Sukarelawan, and Wawasan Desa.
Ismail said the website served as a catalyst between the youth and the ministry.
“The programmes allows users to communicate among each other as well as provide feedback to the ministry. The rise in Internet usage has turned the cyberworld into a phenomenon among the young.
“It is important that we direct them to the right path.”
Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi officiated the launch.
The website includes blogs, online games, e-counselling, video sharing and youth forums.
“We are looking to establish cyber kiosks in 16 Rakan Muda complexes and four activity centres in the first phase,'' said Ismail. “Hopefully by the second and third phases, all 114 youth and sports district offices will have the facility.”
Rakan Muda Remaja Siber programme to be launched soon

The Rakan Muda Remaja Siber programme is designed to guide the younger generation to obtain reliable news online from the right sources.
State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Md Jais Sarday said the programme would be launched in Pontian soon.
“It is part of an effort by the Youth and Sports Ministry to encourage the nation’s young ones to get positive news.
“It can prevent them from being influenced by negative online postings,” he said.

Md Jais told Munusamy Mareemuthu (BN - Permas) that the Jum Centre initiative, with computers and online gadgets, would be implemented statewide.
“We hope to implement it in every parliamentary constituency in Johor.
“The younger generation will judge between good and bad quality information by themselves,” he said.
He added that youth associations in the state had been urged to find new approaches to create better inter-racial integration of youths.
“We hope sports will create more harmonious relations between the races.
“We will work out the programmes to achieve the goal,” he said.

MONEY - MORE WASTE AND LOSSES
Posted by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at July 22, 2008 12:19 PM | Permalink | Comments (397) | TrackBacks (0) | Previous Blog
The Government of Dato Seri Abdullah Badawi has lost billions of Ringgit by cancelling the bridge project to replace the causeway, postponing the double-tracking and electrification of the North-South railway and the sale of M.V. Agusta by Proton.
The Government had also wasted money - RM2 billion in Terengganu.
Thinking that he had the right to use Wang Ehsan, the royalty from Petronas to the State of Terengganu totalling more than five billion Ringgit over several years Dato Seri Abdullah together with Dato Seri Idris Jusoh, the former Menteri Besar of Terengganu went on a spending spree.
Without any proper study and planning, without bothering about the rules and regulations about how Government money should be allocated and used, Dato Seri Abdullah and Dato Seri Idris and their cronies spent huge sums of the "Wang Ehsan" on a theme park (Crystal Mosque), Monsoon Cup, development of Setiu etc etc. More than two billion Ringgit were poured into Terengganu.
Then in 2008, Barisan Nasional won and Abdullah happily decided to spend more of the Wang Ehsan on fancy projects.
Unfortunately the Sultan of Terengganu refused to have Idris Jusoh as Menteri Besar. It was a slap in the face fo Abdullah when he was forced to accept the Sultan's nominee as Menteri Besar.
This new Menteri Besar insisted that the royalty due to Terengganu should be paid to the State and the State should manage the fund.
This was as it should be. But the Menteri Besar insisted that what was spent before this in building the theme park, organising the Monsoon Cup etc worth about RM 2 billion was not from the royalty due to Terengganu. It was from Federal fund.
He demanded that the full amount of royalty over the years should be paid to Terengganu.
So RM2 billion of Federal funds have been expended on Terengganu, the richest State in Malaysia.
Failing this Terengganu has a court case initiated by the PAS Government which the BN State Government has not withdrawn.
The Federal Government will now have to find some RM5 billion to give to Terengganu. Where is this money going to come from? Obviously from the Federal Consolidated Fund.
Basically the Federal Government will lose RM5 billion because it had assumed that a tame Terengganu Menteri Besar would collaborate in some of the most wasteful projects for the State and the country.
I am told that a Disneyland designer was engaged to design the "Crystal Mosque" and theme park. Must cost a lot.
Some contractors made tons of money getting projects without proper processes.
we have elected idiots into power for 50 years.
Come on, Old habits die hard.We and our children will continue voting idiots into powers. Forever and ever.
I tried to grow things on the apartment balcony. God knows we tried. Only managed one serving of kangkung. There is only so much you can plant in the pot.
God also know how many other agricultural exploits that has failed us.
If you remembered, pol pot herded all his intellectuals in cities to go farming. See where that lead to. History remembers it as a failure even when he has the whole country as farmers. Engineers don't know how to farm! period!
It is so bad, grass is not growing in my abandoned pot in the balcony.
You should talk to my father in law one day and he can go on for 3 days about how bad Malaysia's agriculture industry is. I don't even want to start. He is after all, IN the industry.
